What's up with the whole "we-are-not-touching-each-other" thing going in America?
1) During a trip to the States in november I saw a televison segment on a teenager getting detention at her high school for hugging fellow students. Apparently the school has a ban on public displays of affection. The eighth grader broke this ban when she hugged two friends goodbye for the weekend.
2) And then Friday last week I saw this story about an employee at a Michigan supermarket who was fired for having tried to stop a shop lifter. His mistake: He touched the shop lifter and thus broke work place policies which stated that employees are not allowed to touch customers!!!!
I was getting rid of some old computer parts when I saw this little plastic bag containing what looked like a paper clip.
I soon found out that it wasn't a paper clip... It was an Emergency Eject Pin. A tool for getting that jammed computer CD-drive to open. The thing even came with instructions for use and they were thorough...
Oh my god all these years I've been using an ordinary low tech paper clip for the job without the slightest hint that this wonderful tool existed :-))
I live in Europe so I havn't noticed that USA has pushed daylight savings time up by three weeks.
Not a big thing, you would think. But most computer programs aren't designed for this early spring forward in time and apparently American mainstream media has gone into a frenzy asking: What will happen when computers fail to notice that time has changed by one hour?
Well, this report from The Daily Show nails the whole thing perfectly :-))
The site Video Jug is one big learning experience. For example there are snippets about how to ask someone on a date, clean a window, conceal bags under your eyes and uh... I almost forgot... about how to shower. I bet you didn't know you needed that sort of information... ;-)
